Debate: Men in Womenswear

So this debate has been going on for quite a while in the fashion industry. As women have continuously borrowed from men in the past in order to develop bountiful and chic wardrobes, the question has been raised; Why can't men borrow from a women's wardrobe? Menswear has largely remained the same for the last 60 years, with a shift in the dimension of certain garments or the textile has changed. Doesn't this get borrowing? Why don't we try taking elements from a women's collection so that a man's wardrobe can be more dynamic?

Some things that I think guys can try to liven up their wardrobe, border on the edge of feminine while still retaining their masculinity.

Leggings

This way your legs are still completely covered, but if you want you can try fun prints to liven it up or even layer them under shorts for a more unique look.

Kilts

It's about time we take inspiration from our Scottish brothers. Layer them over pants and keep them dark and monochromatic so that you won't feel as though you're wearing a skirt.

Sheer Shirts

This is actually very sexy when the shirt is collared and paired with a suit or tucked into chinos. Avoid t-shirts so it doesn't feel like you're going to a club. 

Shorter Hemlines

Men used to wear shorts this length. I personally think it looks very sexy and besides, a flash of the male thigh is quite nice and unexpected.

Unusual Textiles

This blazer doesn't feel girly because even though it's sequined and shiny, the silhouette is still masculine. This blazer is perfect for parties and it will catch a lot of attention from the ladies.

Not saying I expect this to happen overnight or for anyone to really take this seriously because transitioning menswear is going to be a lengthy process just like it was with womenswear but I have high hopes. Yoko Ono Fashion for Men 1969-2012

Here we have a special and eccentric collection. This here was designed by the infamous Yoko Ono for Opening Ceremony.It is well known that Yoko Ono is quite the unique personalty and this collection reflects exactly that sentiment. Here we have lots of cut-outs, sheer elements and several surprises, this collection certainly stands out among the rest. 

The collection was inspired by a book of hand-drawn illustrations Yoko gave to John when they were married. The collection is quirky and exclusively available at Opening Ceremony. Take a look at some of the pieces:

Five spots for fashion inspiration

There are times when every self proclaimed fashionista needs a little assistance in the clothing department. For me personally this happens every few months when my personal style begins to shift and change. Whenever I get into these slumps I look to a few sources for some inspiration.

1. LookBook.nu

LookBook is a great place to find inspiration and perhaps the first place I look. Here many fashionables share the latest looks from their chic closets. You'll find styles from classic and preppy to the extremely individual and avant garde. It's quite easy to find some help!

2. The Sartorialist.com

The Sartorialist is a great blog that has been around for several years. It's a simple white blog that relies on pictures and a few choice words. Here you'll find photos of different street styles from all around the world. Here our blogger photographs specific details that he likes such as python prints or sheer hems. This blog will let you know all of the micro trends from around the world.

This is the blog to my favorite shoe store on the planet! The shoes offered are cutting edge and so are the pictures on the blog. Here you'll find grunge mixed with current trends and pretty pieces to offer you cutting edge fashion and looks.

The Blonde Salad is one of the most amazing blogs that I follow. Chiara Ferragni is perhaps the best dressed and most recognized blogger as of now. Trend Update: Kilt It

I have exciting news! There is another trend I want to talk about today. Now, as a person who likes to push the fashion envelope I'm quite excited to see that this trend is continuing on! After seeing Kanye West rock them I know that we have some leverage. Right now I'm loving kilts and I think that kilts should be something that guys should wear! I think a skirt is a great way to stand out from the crowd. Kilts are very masculine and you can wear them either alone or with pants!

Here are some ways to wear a kilt:

For those who want to keep the kilt classic will wear it like a true Scot, with a crisp white button up, blazer and knee socks or for the more modern update like Marc Jacobs without the blazer  and socks and wear it with gladiator sandals or combat boots. For the edgier guy pair your kilt with pants or leggings. That way you can bring some "masculinity" to the look. I love the way Kanye did it in leather and kept the kilt and pants the same textile for uniformity. You will definitely see me in a kilt as soon as I can go shopping! I can't wait!
